hello.

i am trying to install my old canon-bjc-240 printer under gentoo. I am
sure it can work correctly cause it worked on rh 6.22 or 7.0 when i
used it some years ago. i've read installation guide from gentoo.org and
a bit of documentation to cups but i haven't found any explanation why
does it doesn't work for me [i mean printer].

as in manual, i've mentioned, i've done:

# foomatic-configure -s cups -p Canon-BJC-240 -c file:/dev/lp0 -n Canon
-d gimp-print-ijs

Btw. I have parport and parport_pc in my /etc/moudles.autoload. i've
started gimp [i have gimp print installed of course] and file -> print.
I've chosen Canon, set Letter -> A4, but after pressing Print-button my
printer prints out some ascii postscript code :>. I found in Setup
Printer that `lp -s -dCanon -oraw` is the command to print [i think that
is correct] but no ppd file is given. I'm quite sure it don't have to be
there but even if i put the full path to my canon's ppd it hadn't given
any effect.

the only way i can achieve positive effect printing non-ascii is
TestPage from Cups www-interface. None of AbiWord, Ggv, Gimp works.

I tried also to use bj200 driver from lp-website instead of gimp's one
the same effect.

I guess the problem can be about filters or rather some gs
configuration, but I really can't find anything written about that in
gentoo's manual and others i have. can anyone give me bright
point-to-point algorithm how to set up my printer?

PS: Since I give up using RH i still try to set up my printer on
diffrent *nix boxes i have - without any effects [always using cups].
I have tried really hard to install it on debian for exapmle, but
that time [since i've installed gentoo] i was dual-system and just
switch do MS Windows to do some printing [it wasn't a problem cause
i print a lot of pages buy very rarely] Now I have Gentoo, and
one-system user - i just really *need* to have it working due to
university classes started and i have big collection of materials
waiting to print.
