Brian, I think you don't give yourself enough credit. I'm not all that experienced in Linux, but the Gentoo install instructions really do work Give them a try. Follow them carefully and exactly and you'll most likely end up with a working machine. One warning from my experience. Maybe study the grub part before you start.
