still doesn't work. i made sure the modules was loaded, but it shows '(unused)'. then i set XF86Config to use 'nvidia' and made sure that the default depth was 16. ran 'kdm' and it didn't load X. the error i got was :

Fatal server error: no screens found that's actually taken from the XF86 log. i'd rather not post the whole thing since it's really long, but if anyone would like to seen it i can send it to you directly.
