I'm using app-cdr/k3b-0.9 to burn DVDs and it works great.  That's 
because I use cdrecord-ProDVD 
<ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/ProDVD/>.  I have to use ide-scsi 
with it though; perhaps I don't have the latest.
