Another question is are you using a KVM? I had a similar problem with my optical scroll mouse going "nuts" under the 2.6.x kernels and it turned out to be my kvm. Not sure if there is a fix out for this yet or not. Good luck either way!

Since I had to look up what a KVM is, I guess I don't use one. :-)
