Which soundfile is it? /dev/dsp?

If so: Only one application at a time can hold the soundfile 
for writing; if you want to play multiple applications you'll 
need a soundserver. I guess you're on Gnome, so esound should 
be your friend (at least if both gaim and evolution have an 
output plugin for esound).
