I had a similar problem a while back. Try downgrading freetype to 2.1.5.
If you don't know how to do this:
1) open a root shell
2) mkdir /etc/portage (if it says the folder already exists, just 
proceed to step 3)
3) echo ">=media-libs/freetype-2.1.5-r1" >> /etc/portage/package.mask
4) emerge freetype
