Ahh...that's a different issue. So what's in /dev, /dev/snd/, and /dev/sound/? Did you reboot after getting the modules setup in /etc/module.d/alsa and running update-modules force? An open odevice failed is due to no devices in /dev - /dev/dsp /dev/pcm with associated device nodes in /dev/snd and /dev/sound.
