(I'm guessing) You have the old ati-drivers installed. Either add them to package.keywords (with the keyword ~x86), remove them comletely, or add

xorg-x11-6.7.99 to package.mask.
Your guess was right - the ati drives. However, does it mean that if I want to use them I have to downgrade xorg-x11?
Because if I add them to package.keywords with ~x86 it generates next dependencies problems, and i really doesn't want to play with the portage config files more then really necessary.

The plain fact is that the ati-driver package for drivers 3.14.6 and below do not work with X.Org above 6.7.0(-r#). Period. To protect the users, if you attempt to install these versions, xorg will downgrade.

However, there is a new version of the ati-drivers that does work with xorg 6.8 (version 8.8.25). These are marked ~86 (and -r3 is ~amd64), so you could add

media-video/ati-drivers ~x86

to /etc/portage/package.keywords, and then upgrade the drivers (which would probably upgrade x.org to 6.8, but even that is an improvement.

These are pretty much your only choices if you intend to continue using the ati-drivers package. Sorry, I have an ATI card too :-( .

New new drivers are expected this month, if ATI can keep to their release schedule. I'm using the 8.8.25 drivers under SuSE (wanted to test them under a supported distribution), and they seem to be 'a step in the right direction', though no major 'improvements' as such. And they do at least work more or less to the level of 3.14.6 with X.org 6.8 (as long as you don't use composite).

So I would suggest upgrading.

Holly
