Are you sure it's not bad memory somewhere important (such as where the kernel
image is stored, etc.)? Perhaps you should try running MemTest for a day or two
straight if you have the time (and if it's x86) and see if that gives you any
strange errors or warnings. It's on the newer Gentoo LiveCDs (my 2004.3-r1
Minimal LiveCD has a memtest boot option) so that shouldn't be too difficult.

Alas, I'm not sure if such as utility exists for non-x86 architectures.
Hopefully someone else can come along and help you if this is case...
