This is too easy...gcc. Without that, nothing else, including the kernel, would exist. There is really only one app I couldn't live without whether I am running Windows or Linux, and that is VMWare. But what I really value on Linux is the freedom, of choice, of the code, and of configuration. I have configured my Gentoo system to work exactly the way I want it, exactly how it suits me best.
