Well, you're using gentoo. So I can assume (at least) that you can read,
you're able to use google and finally will find out which of these three
your system is using. ;-)

All of these three are different approches of managing device nodes.
Since gentoo is all about choices, it lets you choose during
installation which one of these you want to use.

And since your problem is related to devices nodes, it is important to
know which system you chose.
