I may give your method a try. One disadvantage of a shared $DISTDIR
is that files are not available when the network is down, such as when you
reboot after recompiling the kernel and the network drivers need
remerging. Your replicator thingamajig would deal with that, because
$DISTSIR would still be local.

I take it you clean out your local $DISTDIRs regularly.
