IMO the progression from stage1 to stage3 is > best handled by catalyst. Perhaps this is sound pragmatic advice and, if I didn't have a fully functional gentoo on which to run, I would adopt it. However, I am somewhat bitten by the "do-it-from-scratch" bug (not enough to actually use linuxfromscratch) and would like to see what went wrong so I will try again from stage1.
