Here's what always works for me on a dual boot
linux/xp box w/ xp on hda and linux on hdb and lilo
doing boot duties:

Prepare lilo.conf as if it knows nothing about xp,
comment all the windows stuff out and install lilo to
hdb1. Next, mount a floppy and enter

dd if=/dev/hdb1 bs=512 count=1
of=/floppy/gentoo.bin(or anything, really)

unmount the floppy and boot XP. Next, copy gentoo.bin
to c:\ and then edit the boot.ini file by adding
something like Linux=gentoo.bin(just follow the syntax
in the file) to the list of boot options.

When XP next boots you will be given a choice of XP or
Linux. Never fails.
