Have you tried the nouveau drivers? The 3D may not be as fast but the
kernel incompatibilities disappear.

Nope. The latest driver for you card is the latest driver available. The
400 series is *not* a legacy product. The 310.32 driver is the latest
long-term release driver. The 313.18 is the latest short-term release
driver and it also supports your card:
