After partitioning (in parted), did you use `mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/<partition ID>` to initialize the FAT32 filesystem on that partition? https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:Parts/Installation/Disks#Applying_a_filesystem_to_a_partition `parted` is only editing the partition table, not the filesystems applied to those partitions.
