Ever wonder where people get the idea that geoengineering and geoengineers are really really bad? Look no further than the portrayal of scientists and engineers in film and on TV. The references from Grist recently to "Buck Rogers" and the British ministers to "science fiction" are cultural and relate to people's life experiences in what they have seen in works of fiction, science or otherwise. The newest James Bond movie has the bad boy villain stealing all the water from Bolivia. A movie review site referred to this as "geoengineering." Why not have him drain the Panama Canal?
In perusing my new digital cable package (ordered primarily to see the Project Earth series repeatedly), I found not only the Discovery Channel, the Discovery Science Channel and the Discovery Project Green Channel, and a channel started by Al Gore, the Current Channel, but way up at Channel 190, the American Life Channel which reruns shows I used to watch when I was 10-years-old like Lost in Space, the Time Tunnel and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (VBS). I had forgotten that VBS had a number of geoengineering themed episodes and found that one of them is running tonight. This little gem from the cold war is titled "The Blizzard Makers" http://www.vttbots.com/episode_guide_year_1g.html#blizzard and features a plot line in which undersea nuclear tests disrupt the Gulf Stream, causing it to snow in Florida.
