The aforementioned episode actually started at 10pm, so I missed the first half, but learned that the nuclear tests were not done to intentionally change the Gulf Stream. At the end, however, Admiral Nelson blows up the island where the bad guys are situated, restoring the salinity of the Gulf Stream. It reairs at 1am.
Other storylines with a geoengineering theme from the series: 1. Eleven Days to Zero: Man-made Arctic earthquakes intended to create tsunamis to flood out the world (reeks of James Bond). http://www.vttbots.com/episode_guide_pilot.html 2. The Price of Doom: Deep ocean plankton (actually kelp) from the Arctic in a project funded by a corporation out to make money off it turns into killer kelp, attacking the crew. Ex-Nazi scientists, spies and corporate bad guys. http://www.vttbots.com/episode_guide_year_1b.html#mist 3. The Sky's On Fire: Same plot as the movie VBS, in which a missile must be fired to blow up the Van Allen Radiation Belt which has come too close to the Earth and is melting the polar ice caps. I would simply note that James Hansen's mentor was James Van Allen. http://www.vttbots.com/ep_guide_season2_11.html 4. Man of Many Faces: Mad scientist attempts to control all of the ocean tides, threatening to cause the Moon to crash into the Earth. http://www.vttbots.com/episode_guide_year4_b.html#sealed 5. The Abominable Snowman: Attempt to make Antarctica habitable wrecks the global climate. http://www.vttbots.com/episode_guide_year_4e.html#nightmare 6. Flaming Ice: Aliens nearly melt the polar ice caps while trying to keep themselves cold. http://www.vttbots.com/episode_guide_year_4f.html#savage ----- Original Message ----- From: Alvia Gaskill To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, November 20, 2008 10:28 PM Subject: [geo] Some Publicity IS Bad Publicity Ever wonder where people get the idea that geoengineering and geoengineers are really really bad? Look no further than the portrayal of scientists and engineers in film and on TV. The references from Grist recently to "Buck Rogers" and the British ministers to "science fiction" are cultural and relate to people's life experiences in what they have seen in works of fiction, science or otherwise. The newest James Bond movie has the bad boy villain stealing all the water from Bolivia. A movie review site referred to this as "geoengineering." Why not have him drain the Panama Canal? In perusing my new digital cable package (ordered primarily to see the Project Earth series repeatedly), I found not only the Discovery Channel, the Discovery Science Channel and the Discovery Project Green Channel, and a channel started by Al Gore, the Current Channel, but way up at Channel 190, the American Life Channel which reruns shows I used to watch when I was 10-years-old like Lost in Space, the Time Tunnel and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (VBS). I had forgotten that VBS had a number of geoengineering themed episodes and found that one of them is running tonight. This little gem from the cold war is titled "The Blizzard Makers" http://www.vttbots.com/episode_guide_year_1g.html#blizzard and features a plot line in which undersea nuclear tests disrupt the Gulf Stream, causing it to snow in Florida. Assuming I make it all the way through this masterpiece, which airs at 10:30 EST and then again overnight, I will report back on the other "geoengineering" episodes, many of which have Arctic, Antarctic and plankton enhancement run amok themes. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "geoengineering" group.
