Gentlemen,

ARK has implemented full 3D visualisation and surface editing in our latest
3D modelling software. The module is certainly capable of importing a
variety of grid types and would be a complimentary addition to the Geosoft
suite, albeit only available in a UNIX version. We too shared the view that
writing a dedicated 3D viewer was not necessary when there are such good
commercial offerings already available to the developer.

One of the more common 3D widgets in use comes from INT.

I am in complete agreement that the representation of potential field data
in 3D is the way forward as so much more information is available to the
interpreter eg. by folding one surface through another such as horizontal
derivatives with the main field.

On the point of grid editing I am in agreement with Dave Humphrey this is
essential when carrying out G & M inversion as the user may wish to modify
the optimised result (i.e. in the case of a salt overhang). This too has
been 'cracked' with the module and we now only await the seismic fraternity
to catch up with the geologic problem of a multi-z surface!

Regards

Subject: [geonet]: Re: 3D displays and my #1 wish item

It looks like 3D displays such as Marc Pelletier described have a lot of
appeal - it certainly does to me. From an implementation prespective, this
is a nontrivial task. However, starting with a generic 3D viewer and gluing
it into Oasis might be a plausible approach (why write another 3D viewer?).

My #1 item on the wish list is a grid editor. I would like to see something
that works in map view and allows one to either shape the surface and get
quick feedback in the form of contours or allows one to edit the contours
and then rebuilds the surface from the edited contours.

We scoured the marketplace for such a tool last year and didn't find one
that was both capable and affordable. So, we implemented one in another
in-house product. However, if such a thing lived in Oasis montaj, I
wouldn't have to maintain the one I have now!

Regards,
DL Humphrey
