I'm just now getting into it more in depth though. One thing's sure you need to provide auth credentials to do anything that changes anything. Just tried and if you don't have write access to a given layer and try to do something (access to the layer's seed form,etc) it just won't be found.
That said, I'm pretty sure that's just a side effect of the current tighter integration through GeoServerTileLayer. An in-depth assessment of proper security integration is no my todo list.
