Hi Steven,

Assuming OpenLayers as your client, you have the choice of using either the WMS
or WFS service. WMS supports serving spatial data as georeferenced raster
images whereas WFS transports the raw spatial data.
If using WFS OpenLayers will draw the features using vectors and client-side
interaction with the drawn features is possible.

There are plenty of examples on the OpenLayers website which demonstrate the
use of both WMS and WFS layers: http://openlayers.org/dev/examples/

To configure the OpenLayers client for your specific data layers it's often
helpful to view the source of the GeoServer layer preview for the layer.

If the website that will be displaying the map is not hosted on the same domain
and port as your GeoServer instance you will also need to configure a proxy on
the website domain that will relay the requests to GeoServer. There is
information on the OpenLayers site on how to configure OpenLayers to use a
proxy: http://trac.openlayers.org/wiki/FrequentlyAskedQuestions#ProxyHost

Cheers
Adam
