You were right, of course.  It turned out I had published the private views 
using a PostGIS user that had no password, whereas the public views were 
created with a different store with the proper password.

This sounds like a coincidence... the username/password used by
postgis are established
in the store configuration and are completely independent of the
geoserver user that makes
the requests
