Some additional info: I have tried installing Geoserver 2.3.0 as administrator with no luck.
When picking a style from the list my iron browser console picks up: Resource interpreted as Image but transferred with MIME type application/vnd.ogc.se_xml: "http://localhost:8080/geoserver/Shape/wms?REQUEST=GetLegendGraphic&VERSION=1.0.0&FORMAT=image/png&WIDTH=20&HEIGHT=20&STRICT=false&style=point";.
