SOLVED 

When installing GeoServer the reference to JRE was default listed as
C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7. Reinstalling Geoserver pointing to a 64
bit JRE version during Geoserver installation solved the problem: C:\Program
Files\Java\jre7.
