This command also worked fine with me on Windows.
Moreover I used a GeoTIFF with a correct CRS into the metadata and the
layer was correctly setup
(GS 2.6-SNAPSHOT)


curl -v -u admin:geoserver -XPUT -H "Content-type: text/plain" -d
"file://c:/Temp/tmp/o38094a1_wgs84.tif"
http://localhost:8180/geoserver/rest/workspaces/it.geosolutions/coveragestores/atest/external.geotiff
