As Daniele suggested have you installed the gdal core? The download for it will
be on the same page as you found the mrsid.msi

Yes, that variables are configured on my system.
The "gdalinfo.exe --formats" lists the MrSID format after setting the
GDAL_DRIVER_PATH.
A other post says that the gdal core must be installed.
I added the folder containing the gdalinfo.exe to the path - is this correct?

I tried to install the GDAL plugin into geoserver 2.7.0.
The server Windows 2008 R2 64bit has the MVC++ 2010 64bit and MVC++ 2005 32bit
and 64bit installed.
The installed packages are
- geoserver-2.7.0-gdal-plugin.zip
All jars copied to geoserver/WEB-INF/lib
- gdal-data.zip
Unziped to folder and GDAL_DATA environment variable set pointing to
the folder
- gdal-19-1600-x64-mrsid.msi
Installed on server
- gdal-19-1600-x64-ecw.msi
Installed on server
- GeoServer restarted
Unfortunately the needed MrSID datastore is not available. In the log I found
the following:
