I made a test with Geoserver 2.8 milestone version on Windows, with Jetty and cascading by using https and basic authentication works fine with our servers. I could also publish without troubles the Fires24 layer from https://firms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/wms/?SERVICE=WMS&VERSION=1.1.1&REQUEST=GETCAPABILITIES because the site does not seem to require username/password. I think that the "Remote host closed connection during handshake" may come from some general network things and not from Geoserver. Java version may have some influence.
