Yes debugging is the way in this case, to debug this you will need GeoTools and
possibly GeoServer source code.
As long as you are using the same source code versions remote debugging should
work fine.
I would start by putting a debug point in this place:
org.geotools.filter.AttributeExpressionImpl.evaluate(AttributeExpressionImpl.java:229)
This is the method that is failing:

The job of this method is that given a certain feature and a property name it
will try to extract the
the property corresponding value from the feature using a suitable property
accessor, in this case
no suitable property accessor could be found, debugging will tell you why :)
