Hi, here are a couple of bits about the upgrading styles proposal. Generally speaking, the proposal sounds nice, and it's going to introduce some very interesting new functionality, so I'm favourable, but there are a couple of issues preventing me from voting +1 on it.
The first one is the size of the change. I would like to avoid seeing massive change of code in the gt2 codebase so close to GeoServer 1.7.x freeze. Can you svn diff you changes and post them somewhere? If they are really really big I'd prefer to have GeoTools 2.5.x cut and have this go on trunk. Same goes for the raster symbolizer related changes. I'm not seeing how the getFunction() approach is going to replace the ColorMap, can you provide more detail on it? In GeoServer 1.7.x the raster symbolizer support is one of the major new features. Who's going to fix the raster symbolizing code so that it keeps on working after that in the ColorMap interface? What about the parsing and encoding? Actually, I kind of expect everything that was working before the changes to works afterwards too, so this involves of course the streaming renderer, the SLD encoders and parsers. But I'm not too worried about the changes in most SLD objects, since they look mostly method additions (new functionality that the old client code should just ignore, and only eventually after learn to leverage), what worries me is mostly the ColorMap one. Of course you know more about thechanges than I do, so is there anything else that might break existing functionality? One final curiosity is about the parsers and encoders for SE 1.1/SLD 1.1. This is quite of a natural extension for a set of concepts defined in an XML schema. Do you have any plans on working on them, or are you going to persist your styles with some other means?
