Heh - it is not a battle. As with any open source project is it a discussion (hopefully in code).
To add fuel to a slightly different fire - the maven plugin system is magic to the point of being unstable. There is a branch of maven that "hard codes" the plugins used so you can get repeatable stable builds (justin recommended it). One fun thing for maven based projects is to get into the various linux distributions and as such we will need to look at these questions. Some of the competitive advantage maven has enjoyed with the repository system is being eased by competition from ant tasks with their own repository structure (or the ability to read the maven repository structure). Landon I urge you to explore maven use on your own with a small project; rather than poor geotools which is in need of a sanity check and does not provide a kind introduction. There is a lot of functionality there; and it is much easier to acquire then the bad old days of downloading projects and reading their installation requirements.
