For SoC guidance is often from afar (indeed it is our job to introduce open
source software development and culture so afar is not a disadvantage).

We are actually pretty set up policy wise for SoC participation - our
"unsupported" module procedure is alive and well (and documented). Probably
a good idea to set up an Ideas page for 2009 next (and check in with our
osgeo overlords to see if they need a hand).
