I am only the messenger on this one; I was being asked on IRC. 

There is an interesting message on the OSGeo live mailing list as they talked 
to some linux distro guy on which way the wind is blowing with respect to Java 
use.

For my 2 cents; let OSGeo Live try with OpenJDK (since they will anyways) and 
make a decision when we hear how it went?
