Reading the comments, I did try and apply the patch a while ago, and then we 
got stuck figuring out if a change request was needed.
So lets try this, write up a change request (faster then deciding if it is 
needed).

How to write it up? Either fold into gt-main, or I like your idea of putting it 
in as an extension.

Question: This vector grid functionality is likely to be reused by other 
modules right? If so it would be better in gt-main … extensions tend to be 
standalone
