users."
This is the basis of the geowidgets project but I'm not sure how far
it's progressed (or where to find more info in it). Martin has also
mentioned revitalising StyledMapPane, either as part of geotools or part
of geowidgets (I'm not sure which). Actually, it was because my project
was sort of commited to the j2d renderer (the basis of StyledMapPane)
that I stopped updating my geotools code base. Of course, I'd be willing
to help develop 'geowidgets' - there's no point just moaning about
things and expecting other people to sort them out for you :-)
My wish is to refactory J2D-renderer as a GO-1 implementation. GO-1 is a
set of interfaces produces by Polexis and adopted as an OGC standard.
They are part of GeoAPI. Javadoc there:
http://geoapi.sourceforge.net/2.0/javadoc/overview-summary.html
(se the org.opengis.go packages). They may not be perfects, but I think
that they are worth a try. Polexis already have a GO-1 implementation on
top of some commercial products. Following this standard would allows
users to switch implementation more easily.
An other reason why I would like to follow an existing standard is that
some users said that J2D-renderer is too complex. I hope that following
a standard would lower the learning cost.
The new implementation will be part of Geotools, in the ext/go module.
Actually I started this work 3 weeks ago. Some initial classes are there:
http://svn.geotools.org/geotools/trunk/gt/ext/go
but this module is not yet functionnal. I'm really just starting.
Compared to LiteRenderer and the old J2D-renderer, the GO-1 has some
provision for allowing editions.
I will keep the mailing list informed when I will have a working ext/go
module. It should be the replacement of J2D-renderer.
Martin.
