Ah ok - I had seen the road example but saw the xml and assumed that it wasn't quite applicable. Still going to have to figure out how to code the style based on the xml - so maybe if anyone has an example of an xml file parsed into a style, please do share ;) Sorry for being somewhat "helpless", it would just save so much time that I need for other parts of the project (if I get to the style at all).
