When you have that need it may be a "make or break"
deal, either the renderer allows you to get what you need or,
as Wouter did, you have to roll your own.
What I really like about a pluggable rendering architecture
is that it can strike a nice balance,
you get a good general renderer that addresses some common needs
and you can still plug in your custom one that deals with your
unique needs (and keep on using the standard ones for the
rest of the map)
