Running ECQL.toFilter("WITHIN(the_geom, ENVELOPE(0, 1, 0, 1))").toString() also gives me back [ 1 within POLYGON ((0 1, 0 0, 1 0, 1 1, 0 1)) ] So there's something wrong with the ECQL parser for it to replace "the_geom" with "1".
