For source imagery, it's always a shared filesystem, since it's an almost
100% read only workload that network mounts handle well (with transparent
data caching on the client sides and so on).
For GWC tiles instead things might be different... you pre-seed the tile
cache in advance it goes back to mostly read only, and a single share works
fine, if instead you cannot pre-seed for any reason, the workload becomes a
read/write one, in that case the network mounts suffer
and we often keep smaller separate caches on the local hard drives instead.
For data that varies a lot, but still has some caching potential, there is
a hazelcast based in-memory distributed GWC cache that is well suited for
the job, too.
I guess it would be nice to have some sort of mixed approach too, local
caches with hazelcast distribution so that if a tile is already on some node
cache, it gets fetched from there instead of being duplicated... this
approach is not yet available though.
