I just took delivery of one, well the 'kit' they sell

http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=671

which includes the gps unit, SD card and a battery holder (4 x AA batteries). All this for $139 which is still cheaper than the trackstick.

So far the unit is ok. I have had some problems getting it to log in KML rather than just NMEA but that does not bother me as I would rather have the NMEA data and convert it to KML / other format myself.

Only problems are:

1. it takes a bit to get going, but then I have only just started using it, so once an almanac is stored it should be quicker.

        2. I need to make a case of some description.

3. It would be cool to get it to log some other data alongside the GPS,.

I just did a workshop with Christian Nold, http://www.emotionmap.net/ over in Greenwich and it would be cool to be able to add other sensors to the datalogger and capture that data with the gps stamp (I am thinking maybe polution sensors or the Galvanic Skin Response that Christian uses).

I will try and write something about it over at friendlycrowds.com as this really is a bit of kit that a research project / design project could use.

mark.

I am very tempted to get one of these. Note that the GPS unit itself is not included.

The Trackstick is overpriced, for some reason. I haven't played with one, but it's more evocative of dennis's $49 (only it's $39) tracing/tracking device:
