I'd love to help ortho any image as well and could give GRASS a try to do it the open way :)TylerOn 21-Jun-06, at 10:09 AM, Marc Pfister wrote:I do a lot of orthophoto production and could rectify the imagery if someone could get some, as well as GPS some ground control. Since the Playa is so flat the USGS DEMs should work well enough.
We use Geomatica here. I think the open-source GRASS GIS can orthorectify too, but I've never tried it.

When at NASA I had the same issues. I used an expensive tool called Socket Set to get a crappy ortho of some thermal imagery.
May I suggest a light read about photogrammetery? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0072924543/ref=si3_rdr_bb_product/002-2767370-2520843?%5Fencoding=UTF8

My only issue with real planes, is that all the shots I've seen look like this: http://www.seansavage.com/photos/burningman/images/blackrockcity-aerial2.jpg
I could be wrong, but I think orthographic techniques require a bit closer to perpendicular![]()
than that. Does anyone know anything about mounting cameras on the bottom of a plane?

It might be simpler, and more fun, to just hitch a ride with people at
the BRC airport each day. I have a friend who used to fly his small
plane out to BM each year. He would take a few friends for a ride
every other day or so and he would often take hitchikers (usually
skydivers) up when he did a run.

The rig itself wouldn't need any GPS itself, since it would be nearly impossible to duplicate the altitude, location, and yaw/pitch/roll of the shot. The images could be manually georeferenced post event by triangulating known locations within the images.
