The iPhone is using Cingular's network, which is a U-TDOA location-enabled network that might be used to locate the iPhone. But is there a build-in location app on the iPhone already?
It also has the embedded Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi can also be used for geo-location: I don't think Skyhook (Jed, correct me if I'm wrong) is for mobile devices like cell phones (at least not yet.) Navizon is however. It has an API for mobiles like cell phones and PocketPCs. See the Navizon Developer section: http://www.navizon.com/fordevelopers.htm PlaceLab, the open source project, also has an API that is for mobiles (J2ME) . http://placelab.org/toolkit/doc/phoneutilities_howto/ Ekahau is really for micro/pico-level Wi-Fi positioning that requires RF fingerprinting and site surveying. Navizon, Skyhook, PlaceLab are based on triangulation (or proximity). Plazes is Wi-Fi location enabled? I know it uses cell towers.
