Hi,

One suggestion wrt maps and colors (or, preferably, colours!)
is http://www.personal.psu.edu/cab38/ColorBrewer/ColorBrewer_intro.html

A good resource for examing the differences that color can
make.

cheers,
Brian

I made my own set of color ramping pins for google maps. You can have
them also:

They are not as distinct as I'd hoped, as a simple RGB color ramp. I
can't distinguish more than about 16 levels out of the 100 steps on each
pin. Is there a good reference on map coloring I can look at?

If you make a single icon in SVG, you could just write a script that would
change the color (just a set of numbers in the xml) for the fill color for
the icons.
