Hi Gilles - I was thinking...it seems that you are asking about the "how" of the OpenSource cartographic servers.
Maybe the question is not "how pretty are the maps", but "what is the methodology behind creating the maps and visualizing the math of the data"? Is it topology based like a GIS? Is it like a low end CAD product where the polygon is snapped closed, but when you look closely, the beginning and end point do not lie on top of each other? Stuff like that, that I remember studying, but don't remember the details of. I would be interested in hearing the answers to your question. I hadn't much thought about the rendering of the data.
