I have a different approach. The question of "how servers work" is
different, I'm rather focused on user perception of rendering. It would
be easier to list features like anti-aliasing, sub-pixel rendering,
compression algorithms, etc. But different combination of these features
may produce various effects and it's finally a complex task to determine
which one is the best (or fit better to a given objective). Moreover,
some feature like anti-aliasing are not always nice, it looks crappy
sometimes!
So, the question is about "how", sure. But it's the "how" of map users!
I'll soon publish a survey to gather users opinion (both experienced gis
users and novice map users) and I should release a report by the end of
november, I'll advertise it here if you're interested.
