Subject: [geomancers] Platial looking for an intern

Hi everybody,
I'm going to be getting this up on Craigslist this morning, but I
figured this might also be a good place to put the word out. Maybe
someone has a student who is looking for an interesting internship.
Platial just acquired frappr, and I need an intern to help me out
with the integration of the two sites, on the community level. We can
do school paperwork if someone needs an internship for college
credit. There is a minimum amount of intern-level work to be done,
but if we have someone who wants to dally in things like writing
widgets with our api or anything else, we are open to it.
Stipend is $500 a month.
Skills required: good writing, having a sense of humor, love of maps,
excellent online communication skills.
Must have a laptop computer.
Tasks: answering feedback email from frappr users
Making cool maps and promoting them to interested online communities
and bloggers
Quality assurance: testing and writing bug reports. This will be
needed about once every two to four weeks, before and immediately
after major releases
I'll train the person how to do all those things, but I need someone
who has general good sense and who won't need to be micromanaged.
If the person is also into programming, that is obviously a huge
plus. But not required. It would be fun if we had an intern who was
also interested in fooling around with our new api once it's out, but
that's not at all essential.
If you know anyone who might be interested in this internship, put
them in touch with me.

Hi Chris.
I would love to be part of this. I've found the geomancers meetings
hard to get to bc of timing. What kind of schedule would you be
thinking of for this? If it's at a regular time, like 7pm the first
Wednesday of every month, or whatever, it's easier to plan for.
I'm not a very technical person, but I am very interested in the
subject, and I'd like to learn more on the tech side.

Hi,
I'm Christopher Schmidt, a charter member of the Open Source
Geospatial
Foundation. (This title basically just means I'm a participant that
people recognize the name of ;) I'm also a core developer for
OpenLayers, and the maintainer of http://boston.freemap.in/, which
is an
online map built using MassGIS data. As part of an effort to seek
out
Open Source Geo people in the Boston area, I'm canvassing the local
community for interest in a regular open source geospatial interest
group meeting.
For those of you who don't know, OSGeo is a non-profit organization
which is seeking to fulfill an umbrella organizational role for a
number
of Open Source Geospatial software projects, including projects like
GeoServer and OpenLayers. It is currently entering its third year of
operation, and has a number of projects undergoing incubation
currently
to become "OSGeo projects", including everything from uDig and
QGIS to
GRASS to GeoServer.
The goal of having regular meetings would be:
* Create Networking oppourtunities: allow users of open source
geo software to meet with creators of open source geo software
where
possible.
* Share knowledge: meetings could have a presentation from a
particular
person on everything from how to use a certain tool, to types
of data
available, to anything else.
* "Chill out": spend social time with other like-minded
individuals --
either users of open source geosoftware, or just people interested
in learning more about it.
Essentially, I personally envision this as being very similar to a
Linux
Users Group meeting: go someplace, here a 45 minute presentation
with 15
minutes of questions on a particular related topic, then head out,
get
beers someplace, and relax.
The difference between the geomancers meetings of the past and an
OSGeo
users group would be a stronger concentration on technical
discussions/knowledge sharing, a more directed approach to that
knowledge sharing, and (hopefully!) a more regular schedule :)
If such a thing were to take place in the Bostonish area, would
anyone on
this list be interested in attending? Anything in particular that
strikes your interest?
Looking forward to hearing from anyone interested in creating a local
group of OS Geosoftware users...
Regards,
