Here are a few tests around NYC. Actual Location: Lamont Campus, Palisades, NY Nature of Area: moderately forested with scattered low and medium rise buildings (suburban university campus) WiFi Connected? Y Edge Only? N ATT Bar Strenght? 3 Circle Radius: ~1 mile Crosshairs aligned with actual location? N Crosshairs how far off? 2.5+ miles The service located me across the Hudson river south of Dobbs Ferry Actual Location: Bradhurst Ave near 145th Street, Manhattan, NY Nature of Area: mid-rise brownstones and apartment buildings (4-8 stories) WiFi Connected? Y Edge Only? N ATT Bar Strenght? 4 Circle Radius: 20m Crosshairs aligned with actual location? y Crosshairs how far off? <10m Actual Location: 2nd St. near Avenue C, Manhattan Nature of Area: mid-rise commercial and apartment buildings (4-8 stories) WiFi Connected? N Edge Only? Y ATT Bar Strenght? 4 Circle Radius: 30m Crosshairs aligned with actual location? y Crosshairs how far off? <15m I've had several 'unable to locate' responses at my office, where ATT signals are very low. For the last location listed above, I had to run it twice to get a decent location. The first time that I ran it, the circle was about a km in radius. I thought it could do better, so I hit locate again and got an excellent location. I suspect that in Manhattan, where the tower network is dense, locations will always be good. Suburban areas (such as the campus in the first location listed above) are bound to have variable positioning. cheers, Greg _______________________________________________ Geowanking mailing list [email protected] http://lists.burri.to/mailman/listinfo/geowanking
