I have to second the idea of using the Boost phone, a friend of mine
successfully used a Nextel phone and software I wrote to do this exact thing
5 years ago:

accessible serial port for $20 is a great deal.  Combine
that with the fact that AT&T is now letting you add MEdia net data buckets
to GoPhone plans (1meg-$5, 5meg-$10, unlimited-$20) and all kinds of cool
hacks are now practical.
