FWIW a UK+(European?) based equivalent would be a nokia n95 + nokia sports tracker which would be 'free' on a decent voice+text+data package (~£35/month).

If you are going the WinMo route check out the open source GPStracker

The source is very well written and easy to modify. It has GPX export as is, and I added KML export in 20 minutes. It also has a stub for upload to a server which should be pretty easy to modify for your requirement below.

For hardware, I just got an AT&T Tilt 3 weeks ago. If you do end up going for new hardware for your project this is a good all in one device. I used to use a Bluetooth GPS but it was a pain in the ass to always have to remember to bring it along. I had no idea how much my life would change once my phone had unlocked true client side GPS :-) although its shown priced at 299 on their site, I got it for 149 with a 2 year contract in store

it’s a geowanker dream device. If you go this route and you want my modified source for GPStracker, drop me a mail.

The only knock against the Tilt in my 3 weeks is that it’s a battery pig. Under normal use it can go a couple of days between charging, but with all the radios going I have to remember to charge it each night. Not unreasonable considering what its running I guess…

Run.GPS works well for recording and reporting my marathon training. The prereqs narrow down your options though. You need a windows mobile phone and internal/external GPS.

Hello all,

Long time reader, first time poster...

I'm working on a personal project to track my bike ride across the country this summer. I wanted to do something with live tracking but not have to buy an expensive gps unit and subscription. I'm also looking to carry as
little weight as possible.

So I was thinking, why not use my cell phone (or a cell phone that has the potential to do the following)? I'm thinking I could use some software (and hopefully not have to write it) to triangulate my position via cell towers (similar to how the iphone works). That averaged position would then be
submitted somehow to my server which takes it and updates my map.

The problem is: is there such software to triangulate, ideally one that will also take that position and send it out to something (email, txt, whatever)?

Any other ideas, advice, help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Joe
