Hi Steve, >I'm not looking so much to argue and change minds as I am to try and >find others who are also interested in thinking beyond the mash-up. If >you know of such groups, please recommend one so that I can join their >mailing lists.
I don't know of any such mailing lists - I've come to see this problem as an extension of the "Semeantic Web" effort. (There is a discussion list http://www.nabble.com/w3.org---semantic-web-f11598.html which does have some "geo" "gis" threads.) >If none exist, then we should create one with a purpose that does >emphasise how important the map is (hence OSM is great despite SteveC >being Mr Mash-up), but defines a desire to move past the categories >and layers that are damaging data. I agree with your premise but I'm not sure that I need another mailing list. (If you do start one please announce it here.) >It is a little ironic that a group like this should need to categorise >itself, whereas the real grouping is the message here or the idea >there occurring across many conversations in many places. I think that there is a bit of confusion here between the group and some of the contributors. If you go back to the archive for the very first month http://lists.burri.to/pipermail/geowanking/2003-April/thread.html#1 and step through the messages you'll see that many of the topics you have raised are there - and that was 5 years ago. >I have looked, and my failure to find my camping spot in the ecology >of ideas is indicative of the need for a better search function. :) Very eloquently put... I am intrigued by your mention, in an earlier post, of a need for a (new) metamodel (http://www.metamodel.com/article.php?story=20030115211223271 ) to facilitate better use of spatial data. If you could start a new thread with your ideas on how that metamodel might "look" I would willingly discuss it.
